Ultimate Resource Guide for Flamenco Dancers

March 11, 2025 Posted by rina@rinaorellana.com Flamenco Accessories & Tools, Flamenco Dance, Learning Flamenco No Comments

As a flamenco dancer, there are so, so many resources out there for shoes, accessories and more. It’s easy to get overwhelmed with not knowing how to decipher through aaaaaall those websites. Well, don’t worry. I’ve got you!!

Here is YOUR guide to resources for flamenco dancers. You’ll find your perfect shoes, costuming, accessories, music, practice floor and more! ¡OLE!

FLAMENCO SHOES

Shoes are the number one item you need as a flamenco dancer. Without the right shoe, you can inhibit your dancing ability as well as cause injury. It’s a sound investment if you’re planning on dancing flamenco for a while. When ordering online, be sure to understand the return policy! These are just a a sampling of different flamenco shoe brands.

Senovilla – available in the U.S. at Flamenco West in Southern California. They’re known for the rosewood heel that makes a nice crisp sound. I’ve been wearing these for years.

Menkes – A nice solid shoe with fantastic leather quality. NOTE! They have some great priced beginner models available through Amazon!

Begoña Cervera –  Their styles are usually on the fancy side and the sole has some nice padding. Beautiful.

Gallardo – This is one of the best brands with the quality of the leather and heel sound. I’ve had several pairs of these also that have lasted me for years.

Arte FyL – Beautiful designs, great fit. I ordered a pair from the shop while visiting Madrid with a really quick turn around!

Flamenco Export – They sell different brands but also carry very reasonably priced “semi-professional” shoes, that would be good for beginners!

COSTUMING & ACCESSORIES

There are many choices out there for costuming. In the studio, you can wear almost anything, but it’s nice to have a pretty practice skirt. Other items you may need in class are castanets (castañuelas,) fan (abanico,) shawl (mantón,) bata de cola (long train dress or skirt).

Lunares Great selection of costuming coming from Brazil. Many of my students have purchased beautiful dressed from them.

Flamenco West Based in Los Angeles and carries shoes, some dance wear, fans, shawls and small accessories. I get my shoes and flecos there!

Lands Far Away Imports Based in the United States and carries fans, shawls and other accessories.

Everything Flamenco Based in Spain, featuring costuming, fans, shawls, shoes, and other accessories. Many of my students have purchased beautiful batas de cola from them.

Flamenco Export Based in Spain and carries costuming, fans, shawls, shoes, and other accessories.

Flamenco y Mas costuming, fans, shawls, shoes, and other accessories

FLOORS FOR PRACTICING FOOTWORK

The easiest solution is to buy a piece of plywood (about one inch thick) and cover it with a coat of polyurethane, and you’re good to go!

But check out these other pre-made solutions.

O’Mara’s Sprung Floors

Fasfoot – portable, folding, and expandable dance floors — perfect for tappers, Irish Step and Flamenco dancers alike.

Alvas Bars, Floors & Mirrors– I’ve had my shows at Alvas since the beginning! Pre pandemic, they had dance studios, dance supplies stores and performance space. They still have the performance space but only sell supplies online. Check out the multiple flooring options. The roll up tap mat looks very cool!

Fábrica Flamenca en Sevilla– various portable wood floors

MUSIC FOR PRACTICING

APPS

These apps can play all palos (flamenco rhythms) at unlimited tempos. They also play just compas (the drum machine or metronome) with different varieties of palmas (hand clapping).

Dr. Compas app

Flamenco Metronome (for Mac or Windows)

Flamenco Compas

I used to own dozens of CD’s and digital downloads in the before-times. Now, I create playlists on YouTube and Spotify. Now you can use them too!

Flamenco Practice Solo Compás on YouTube

Flamenco Practice Music on Spotify

HAPPY DANCING!!!
