Getting Ready For The Dog Days Of ̶S̶u̶m̶m̶e̶r̶ Flamenco

Getting Ready For The Dog Days Of ̶S̶u̶m̶m̶e̶r̶ Flamenco

June 22, 2022 Posted by rina@rinaorellana.com Flamenco Dance, Learning Flamenco No Comments

We know that the dog days of summer are coming up.

You know what that means- those lazy, hot days when all you want to do is lie down in a hammock, in the shade, maybe with a refreshing drink in hand.

This goes for flamenco, too.

The dog days of flamenco when the dance studio doesn’t have AC and it’s just hot, stuffy and oppressive even with a fan.

When your kids are home from school for the summer and you need to keep them busy or else they’ll just play video games all day…. So you don’t “have time” to practice or the energy to go to class.

When you actually do get to go on little trips to visit family or explore a new town or just get some rest…. So again, no time.

But there’s another form of the dog days of flamenco. One that isn’t about being lazy and lethargic. It’s the one that allows yourself to get energy from the sun.

Where you get to hang out longer with your flamencas on warm nights. Where you find new ways of moving that feel good in the humidity (Guajiras, anyone?) Where you actually use the heat and stuffiness of the dance studio and enjoy sweating out your dance even more. Where you feel the sun’s energy invigorates you to practice with more attention- quality over quantity!!

So, you can think, “I’m so busy this summer, I don’t have time for flamenco.” That’s kind of like saying, “It’s summer, I don’t have time for breathing.” Because flamenco is in our bones no matter what. All time is flamenco time!!

The energy of summer is fire and that element brings us joy. Flamenco is all about fire and that joy gives us an expansive feeling in our chest, our heart. This allows us to communicate and express ourselves even more through this beautiful dance form.

So, as we enter summer, instead of thinking of how this season will distract you from flamenco, I suggest we take the beautiful aspects of this time- fire, joy, expression- and allow our flamenco energy to find its place within it. Take this time to express yourself with the joy and passion that this season has to offer.

Check out this 7 Day Flamenco Quickstart Course and you’ll have plenty of material to work with over the summer at your own pace. Buy it once and it’s yours forever!
