What’s YOUR Flamenco Story?

What’s YOUR Flamenco Story?

July 17, 2022 Posted by rina@rinaorellana.com Flamenco Community, Flamenco Dance, Learning Flamenco No Comments

I just love hearing people’s flamenco stories. What *was* it that initially piqued their interest?

For me, I always knew something about flamenco and was intrigued by it. Not sure how since I’m not Spanish, but I am Latina, so perhaps I saw it on the Spanish language television stations that we watched as a child. I know there was one year that I was a flamenco dancer for Halloween. Go figure.

Even though I started belly dancing when I was 18 and danced that for years, I became OBSESSED with flamenco! I just never found a good opportunity to start learning it. But then I had quit college at UC Berkeley to go live in Spain- not to learn flamenco, though! While there, I wanted to watch a flamenco class before taking it. The teacher said NO and scared me off! So I never went back. Another time in San Francisco, I wanted to take one class with Rosa Montoya (a legendary dancer from Spain), but she wouldn’t let me. She said that flamenco required commitment (true) and if I didn’t pay for a whole series, I wasn’t allowed! Ack!! Scared me again!

It wasn’t until my mid 20’s that I finally acted on my passions and started taking classes with Yaelisa. And the rest is history. 😍

I recently asked the members of the Online Flamenco Studio FREE Community Group on Facebook to share their own origin story. Here are few fun ones:

What’s YOUR flamenco origin story???
